Biography
Jianguo Lu found the erhu, the two-stringed Chinese fiddle, in childhood and later performed in Europe. After the Shanghai Conservatory he was taken into the Central Chinese Orchestra for National Music in Beijing, and from 1990 began appearing regularly in Europe — the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin in 1991, Bad Gleichenberg the following year, the Stephanssaal in Karlsruhe, Munich's Gasteig, the Stuttgart garden exhibition of 1993. He has played with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra at the Stelzenfestspiele and has appeared at Christmas concerts in Leipzig's Nikolaikirche. In 2012 two Chinese universities made him an honorary professor for his work in keeping the Asian tradition alive abroad. With the Beijing ensemble he took part in the soundtrack recording for Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor. In 2026, from his base in Leipzig, he played the Butterfly Lovers concerto of Chen Gang and He Zhanhao on the erhu with the Thueringen Philharmonie Gotha-Eisenach under Nayden Todorov.
