Baritone
Biography
Johannes Beck was born in Eisenstadt in 1969 and sang his first solo — in Haydn's Creation — at sixteen, while still at the Gymnasium there. He studied in Graz, graduating with distinction in 1992, then in Texas with Joyce Farwell and at the Juilliard School with Cynthia Hoffmann, and joined the studio of the Zurich Opera in 1994 and of the Bavarian State Opera from 1995 to 1997. A long attachment to the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz from 1996 brought him more than thirty roles, among them Zar Peter, Papageno, Nardo, Marcel and Schaunard, Dandini and Olivier; he sang the solo baritone in Britten's War Requiem at Westminster Cathedral in London, appeared at the Mörbisch and Edinburgh festivals in 2006 and 2007, and was in the ensemble of the Cologne Opera before joining Theater & Philharmonie Thüringen in 2012.
