Biography
Josep Ribas i Gabriel composed for the Catalan lyric theatre. Born in Gràcia, he wrote songs and stage works, and his name rests above all on Pel teu amor, a two-act lyric sainete to a Catalan text by Miquel Poal i Aregall, premiered at the Teatre Tívoli in December 1922. The show ran only briefly, but one number from it, the Cançó d'en Blai, was taken up by the tenor Emili Vendrell and, under the popular title Rosó, entered the Catalan song repertory. Fígaro, Gall de Ripoll, Primavera and La Tuna de Alcalá also carry his name. He was born in 1882 and died in 1934, and the Cançó d'en Blai is published for voice and piano.
