Biography
Boris Godunov, Philip II in Don Carlos, Méphistophélès — these are among Julian Konstantinov’s roles. He won the Boris Christoff International Competition for Young Opera Singers in 1996, and his engagements have taken him to La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden, the Paris Opera, the Vienna State Opera, the Teatro Colón and the Liceu, and to Salzburg and Edinburgh in festival seasons. He was still a student when he first sang Don Basilio at the Sofia Opera in 1992; he studied at the Pancho Vladigerov National Academy of Music and joined the company as a soloist in 1994. Carnegie Hall and the Concertgebouw have heard him in concert repertoire, Verdi's Requiem above all, and he has worked with Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti and Zubin Mehta. His distinctions include the Rosa Ponselle award and the Premio Galileo in Florence. He was born in Sofia and studied in the class of Asen Selimski. His engagements have taken him also to the Deutsche Oper, the Teatro Real in Madrid, La Fenice and Rio de Janeiro, and to the festivals of Bregenz, Baden-Baden and Savonlinna, with Vladimir Fedoseyev, Julius Rudel and Gustavo Dudamel among the conductors. He has recorded for EMI, Nightingale and RAI, including a disc of Mussorgsky's Songs and Dances of Death.
