Trumpet
Biography
She was eleven when she took third prize in the fourteen-to-seventeen category of the European young trumpeters' competition, and by 2012 she was playing as a soloist at summer festivals. Lucienne Renaudin Vary, from Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire in the Loire-Atlantique, studied trumpet at the École Nationale de Musique du Mans with Philippe Lafitte and jazz in the same building with Santiago Quintans — the two strands have run side by side ever since — before entering the Paris Conservatoire in the class of Clément Garrec. The Victoires de la Musique Classique named her Révélation in 2016; the Arthur Waser Prize in Lucerne, announced in 2019, followed in 2020, the first given to a woman, and an Opus Klassik as young artist in 2021. Her Warner Classics records keep both halves of her playing in view: The Voice of the Trumpet (2017), made with Rolando Villazón and the Orchestre National de Lille, Mademoiselle in New York with the BBC Concert Orchestra, Piazzolla Stories, Trumpet Concertos (2022), a Callas tribute, Casta Diva (2023), and the Dvořák recording When I Was Looking to the Sky (2025). She leads her own quartet, has opened for Wynton Marsalis at Jazz in Marciac and played the Proms in 2019. Bulgarian audiences heard her at Pravets in July 2023 with the Sofia Philharmonic. Born in 1999, she won the Selmer-Le Parnasse competition in January 2010, took first prizes two years later at the Rencontres Internationales des Cuivres in Belgium and at the Maurice André competition in Alès in the eighteen-to-twenty-five category, and won the Petites Mains Symphoniques in both its classical and its jazz divisions. The concerto album was made with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and Michael Sanderling, and Piazzolla Stories with Sascha Goetzel and the Monte Carlo Philharmonic. At the Konzerthaus in Dortmund she took up a three-season residency as one of its Junge Wilde. In 2025 she received the Opus Klassik award for instrumentalist of the year.
