Violin
Biography
Wieniawski's Second was the concerto Philippe Quint played at his début, at nine years old. Born in Leningrad in 1974, he trained at Moscow's special music school for gifted children with Andrei Korsakov before moving to the United States for a bachelor's and a master's at Juilliard, where Dorothy DeLay, Cho-Liang Lin and Masao Kawasaki taught him and Isaac Stern, Itzhak Perlman, Arnold Steinhardt and Felix Galimir advised him. He has made an unusually wide path of it since — neglected concertos revived and new ones commissioned, a tango quintet and later a jazz trio, and in 2010 a leading role in the independent film Downtown Express. His recordings of the Korngold and William Schuman concertos brought Grammy nominations; among the others are the first recording of Corigliano's Red Violin Caprices, Rorem's concerto, Bernstein's Serenade, the complete Rózsa works for violin and piano with William Wolfram, Paganini arranged by Kreisler, a Tchaikovsky made in Sofia with the Sofia Philharmonic under Martin Panteleev, and Chaplin's Smile, an album of the film composer's songs arranged for violin. Several of his programmes are built as staged narratives — Homage to J. S. Bach, The Legend of Astor Piazzolla — and he founded the Mineria Chamber Music Festival in Mexico City, which he directs. He has played the 1708 Ruby Stradivari and a 1738 Guarneri del Gesù on loan from the Stradivari Society. The Guarneri is the 1738 Sennhauser, and the Tchaikovsky album pairs the concerto with Arensky's Second Quartet, played with Claudio Bohórquez, Nicolas Altstaedt and Lily Francis; the Glazunov and Khachaturian concertos he recorded with the Bochum Symphony Orchestra under Steven Sloane. He has played with the orchestras of London, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Bournemouth and Houston, the Staatskapelle Weimar, the Komische Oper Berlin and the MDR orchestra at the Gewandhaus, under Marin Alsop, Kurt Masur, Cristian Măcelaru, Edo de Waart, Ludovic Morlot, Jorge Mester and Bramwell Tovey.
