Mezzo-soprano
Biography
Rome-born, a graduate in singing of the Conservatorio di Adria and afterwards a pupil of Raina Kabaivanska at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Veronica Simeoni made her debut in 2005 as Cuniza in Verdi's Oberto, conte di San Bonifacio, with the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale of Spoleto on tour in Japan. Italian and French repertoire have divided her work almost evenly since. Charlotte in Werther, Marguerite in La damnation de Faust, Dalila, Didon in Les Troyens and Carmen stand on one side of that division; Azucena, Amneris, Eboli, Adalgisa and Preziosilla on the other, with Jocasta in Oedipus Rex belonging to neither. La Scala, La Fenice, the Rossini Opera Festival at Pesaro, Welsh National Opera, the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, the Regio in Turin, the San Carlo and the houses of Bologna, Zurich and Valencia have engaged her, under conductors including Riccardo Chailly, Lorin Maazel, Yuri Temirkanov, Valery Gergiev and Daniele Gatti. Song with piano occupies her seriously — Wagner, Mahler and Shostakovich among the composers she has taken into recital.
