The Darkness of "Faust"

05.01.2002

This is the first Faust in the fact-filled biography of the 26-year-old guest conductor Nayden Todorov, who established himself as the unifying figure among the participants in the production. With ease of gesture and breadth of interpretive thought, adapting the sonic scales and layers to the aesthetic goals, he managed to bring to life the surrealistically unfolded mysticism of the narrative. Nayden Todorov achieved excellent dynamic balances and a magnificent relief of the orchestra, against which even the less impressive performers stood out clearly enough. His interpretation, aligned with the stage vision, is built in broad strokes, yet with a noticeable tendency to evoke unusual sensuality. It is at once powerful and beautiful, dark and sensual, and endowed with a dramatic force that will shake the audience and draw it into deep empathy.
