The Symphonies of Louis Glass

03.2002

Compared with the time when they recorded the Fourth Symphony… the performance by conductor Nayden Todorov (b. 1974) and the Bulgarian orchestra has shed its unnecessary strain, and they now seem able to speak freely of what they have felt in Louis Glass's music. It is in the second movement that Todorov's special qualities are displayed most admirably… That the music never becomes the least bit heavy despite this tempo is presumably because the orchestra is kept well under control… the music is full of life.
