Trumpet Concerto "Saint Marc"
- Composer
- Tomaso Albinoni
- Genre
- Concerto
The Concerto Saint Marc reached the modern repertoire through the trumpet, most often in the edition prepared by Jean Thilde, and it has become a fixture of the instrument's baroque programmes: three movements, a bright outer pair framing a slow middle, written high and clean for an instrument that has little else of that period to play. Its title points at the basilica of San Marco in Venice, and it is regularly announced as music written for that building.
It corresponds to nothing in Albinoni's authenticated collections — the concertos of opp. 5, 7, 9 and 10 — and Albinoni never held a post at San Marco; he worked outside the city's institutional structures and described himself on his title pages as a Venetian dilettante. The piece belongs with the baroque trumpet works assembled or reconstructed in the twentieth century for the modern valved instrument, and is kept here under the name it carries in print.
