History of the work

A single continuous overture built from familiar carols — Joy to the World, Deck the Halls, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Good King Wenceslas, Silent Night, Jingle Bells, O Come All Ye Faithful — written for the Boston Pops in 1950 and recorded by them under Arthur Fiedler that year.
