Mozart arrived in London in 1764, aged eight, and spent months in the company of Johann Christian Bach, the youngest son of Johann Sebastian and by then the city's leading concert organiser. What he took from that encounter is audible for the rest of his life: the galant keyboard concerto, with its clear tonal plan and singing solo line, came to him through Bach's London sets. Those concertos were published in three collections between 1763 and 1777 and were designed to be playable by good amateurs on either harpsichord or fortepiano.
