BWV 1056 is one of the shortest of Bach's harpsichord concertos and, like the rest, an arrangement of earlier material. Its slow movement had already served as the opening sinfonia of the cantata Ich steh mit einem Fuß im Grabe, BWV 156, where an oboe carries the melody over pizzicato strings; in the concerto the same line goes to the keyboard. Bach copied the whole set into a single manuscript around 1738 for use with the Collegium Musicum in Leipzig.
