Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, the eldest son of Johann Sebastian, wrote a small number of orchestral symphonies, of which the one in F major, F 67, is the most often played. It is in three movements and opens with a passage of deliberate harmonic collision that has given it the nickname Dissonant. The same music also survives as the sinfonia to one of his church cantatas, a common economy of the period. Friedemann held posts at Dresden and Halle, left the Halle position in 1764, and spent his last twenty years without a permanent appointment.
