Only two solo violin concertos by Bach survive complete, and this is the earlier-numbered of them. It is usually assigned to the Köthen court, where he had an orchestra and no liturgical duties, though a Leipzig origin has also been argued. Bach later transcribed it for harpsichord in G minor as BWV 1058. The first movement is built on a single ritornello figure that never fully departs, and the finale is a gigue in nine-eight in which the soloist's material is drawn entirely from the orchestral theme rather than set against it.
