Chamouard wrote Madrigal d'été in 2016 for cello and string orchestra, and it is not a concerto in the usual sense: the solo line unfolds as a single long elegiac melody over the strings rather than as a contest between soloist and ensemble. The Plovdiv Philharmonic recorded it in November 2017, in the sessions that also produced the Fourth Symphony, and Indesens issued the disc in 2018. The piece belongs to the contemplative side of a French composer born in 1952 whose later music draws openly on Taoist and Sufi thought.
