Victor Chuchkov wrote the Concerto for Laughter and Orchestra in 1992 for the bicentenary of Rossini's birth, building it on motifs from Rossini's music. The solo part is written not for an instrument but for an actor, and was conceived for Ivan Balsamadjiev, who gave its first performance and long remained its only interpreter; the composer himself takes the piano and harpsichord.
