Clara Schumann composed her Piano Concerto in A minor when she was only fifteen. She later lost confidence in herself as a composer and devoted her energies primarily to a performing career that lasted almost sixty years. A close friend of Brahms, she also became an essential advocate for the music of both Brahms and Robert Schumann. The concerto preserves the bold beginning of that remarkable life: a teenage composer already writing for the public stage.
