Gautier Capuçon introduced the cello concerto at the Wiener Konzerthaus on 18 March 2022, with the Vienna Symphony conducted by David Robertson — a week before the same composer's percussion concerto was heard in London. The commission was shared by the Vienna Symphony, the Konzerthaus, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the San Francisco Symphony, and performances in Paris and San Francisco followed within the year. It runs to some thirty-six minutes in four movements, the same layout Elfman had used for his violin concerto of 2017, and treats the soloist as a continuous, unbroken voice.
