Elgar sketched the first of the marches on 3 June 1901 and finished it in July; Alfred Rodewald conducted the premiere in Liverpool that October, and at the London performance two days later the audience demanded it twice over. The title comes from Othello. The trio melody was fitted with words by A. C. Benson for the Coronation Ode of 1902 and, as Land of Hope and Glory, became an unofficial second anthem. Elgar planned six such marches as a suite rather than a series; the fifth appeared in 1930, the sixth only posthumously.
