El sombrero de tres picos grew out of a pantomime, El corregidor y la molinera, that Falla wrote in 1917; Diaghilev saw it, asked for a full ballet, and staged the result at the Alhambra Theatre in London on 22 July 1919, with choreography by Léonide Massine, sets and costumes by Picasso and Ernest Ansermet conducting. Falla drew two concert suites from the score. The second gathers the three dances of the final act — the neighbours' seguidillas, the miller's farruca and the closing jota — and is the more frequently played of the pair.
