Caminito was composed by Juan de Dios Filiberto in 1926 to a lyric Gabino Coria Peñaloza had written some years earlier about a path in the province of La Rioja, not about Buenos Aires. The direction of influence was reversed afterwards: the alley in the La Boca district of Buenos Aires, where Filiberto grew up, was named Caminito in 1959 after the tango and became a tourist site on that basis. Carlos Gardel recorded it in 1926, which fixed the melody in the repertoire; orchestral versions followed.
