In the Mood was recorded by the Glenn Miller orchestra on 1 August 1939 for Bluebird and became the band's defining record. The arrangement is credited to Joe Garland, who built it from a riff that had circulated for years — Wingy Manone had recorded it as Tar Paper Stomp in 1930, and Edgar Hayes had a version in 1938. Garland's chart was too long for a ten-inch side; Miller cut it down and added the fade-and-return ending, twice dropping to near silence before the final chorus. Andy Razaf later supplied lyrics.
