Between 1919 and his death in 1937 Gershwin wrote several hundred songs, most of them for Broadway shows whose books are now forgotten while the numbers remain in use. Fascinating Rhythm, The Man I Love, Summertime, I Got Rhythm and Embraceable You were written to be sung in the theatre, and their harmonic turns proved supple enough to survive transplantation into jazz playing, into recital programmes and into the concert hall. Arrangers have long gathered them into orchestral sequences; Paul Bateman's suite is one such compilation, setting the songs side by side without the shows that first carried them.
