Goleminov's Symphonic Variations are built on a theme by Dobri Hristov, the composer who a generation earlier had done most to bring Bulgarian church and folk material into written art music: an act of homage from the second generation of Bulgarian composers to the first. Goleminov had studied at the Schola Cantorum in Paris with Vincent d'Indy and Paul Le Flem, and afterwards in Munich, and from 1943 he taught orchestration, conducting and composition at the State Academy of Music in Sofia. The variations are an independent orchestral work.
