Violin Concerto

Jenkins's concerto for violin and orchestra was written for the Kazakh violinist Marat Bisengaliev, who has premiered and recorded much of his concertante music. It carries the title Sarikiz and takes its programme from a Kazakh legend of a girl who threw herself from a cliff rather than accept a forced marriage; the solo writing draws on the ornamented, folk-derived line Bisengaliev brought to the collaboration. Jenkins later wrote further pieces for the same soloist, and the concerto has been recorded with Kazakh forces.
