My Fair Lady opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York on 15 March 1956 with Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews, and ran for 2,717 performances; Frederick Loewe wrote the music, Alan Jay Lerner the book and lyrics, after Shaw's Pygmalion, which Shaw's estate had long refused to release. The overture is a straightforward medley of the principal tunes — I Could Have Danced All Night, On the Street Where You Live, the title of the show — orchestrated, like the rest of the score, by Robert Russell Bennett and Phil Lang.
