Jon Lord recorded Sarabande in September 1975, while still the keyboard player in Deep Purple, with the Philharmonia Hungarica directed by Eberhard Schoener and a rock rhythm section playing alongside the orchestra; the album appeared the following year. Its eight movements take their titles from baroque dance forms — Fantasia, Sarabande, Aria, Gigue, Bourrée, Pavane, Caprice, Finale — and follow the outline of a suite without observing its conventions: the Gigue and the Bourrée each run past ten minutes, with extended solos over the orchestral writing. Lord returned to this ground repeatedly in his later concert works.
