Nuovo Cinema Paradiso failed in Italian cinemas in 1988 and was cut by half an hour before Cannes the following year, where it took the Special Jury Prize; the Academy Award for best foreign film followed. Ennio Morricone wrote the score for Giuseppe Tornatore, and his son Andrea, then in his twenties, wrote the love theme that runs under the closing reel of censored kisses. The two shared a BAFTA for it. The music has since detached itself from the film, which is about a boy, a village projectionist, and the loss of both.
