Ruhe sanft, mein holdes Leben (Zaide)

Zaide was left unfinished. Mozart began it in Salzburg in 1779 and worked on into 1780, then abandoned it for Idomeneo with the arias and ensembles of two acts written and no overture, no third act and no finale. Johann Andreas Schachtner's text tells of Europeans enslaved at a Turkish court — the subject Die Entführung aus dem Serail would take over. Constanze found the manuscript among his papers in 1799; it was published in 1838 and first staged in Frankfurt in 1866.
