Dated 5 October 1773 on the autograph, written in Salzburg within weeks of Mozart's return from a stay in Vienna where he had encountered Haydn's recent symphonies. It is the first of only two symphonies he wrote in a minor key, and it is scored for four horns instead of two, which allows the wind to sustain harmony under the syncopated string writing of the opening. The tremolos, wide leaps and abrupt dynamics of this seventeen-year-old's score belong to the Sturm und Drang manner then current in Austrian instrumental music.
