Nielsen began the Flute Concerto while travelling in Germany and Italy in August 1926, intending to present it on 21 October. A serious stomach illness interrupted the work, and the premiere at the Salle Gaveau in Paris was given with a provisional ending; the orchestra of the Paris Conservatoire's concert society played under the composer's son-in-law Emil Telmányi. Ravel and Honegger were in the hall. Nielsen called the evening one of the greatest experiences of his life. The complete version was first heard in Copenhagen on 25 January 1927.
