The Third Concerto stayed in the Paganini family's private possession for almost a century and a half. Written around 1826, it was never published, and the manuscript passed through the composer's heirs until Henryk Szeryng was allowed to study it; he gave the first performance in 1971 with the London Symphony Orchestra and recorded it soon after. The slow movement, marked Adagio — Cantabile spianato, is one of the few extended lyrical stretches Paganini wrote for the instrument, with almost no display writing at all before the polacca finale.
