Only the solo part of the Fifth Concerto survives in Paganini's hand; the orchestral accompaniment was lost. Written in 1830, the work waited more than a century for a playable score. Romeo Franzoni, Giusto Dacci and later Marco Anzoletti attempted reconstructions that were never printed, and in 1958 Vittorio Baglioni commissioned a new one from Federico Mompellio for the Accademia Chigiana. That version was first performed in September 1959 by Franco Gulli under Luciano Rosada. The slow Andante, un poco sostenuto is among the most affecting pages Paganini wrote.
