History of the work
Balkan Bolero received the encouragement prize in the Sofia Philharmonic’s 7/8 composition competition. The audience determined the final ranking, placing the work alongside Georgi Andreev’s prize-winning Belasitsa, Krasimir Taskov’s Thracian Sanctuaries and Hristofor Radanov’s symphonic picture Rhodopes. The competition was conceived to encourage new symphonic music connected with Bulgaria’s asymmetrical rhythmic traditions.
