Prokofiev finished his First Piano Concerto in 1912, at twenty-one, and played the solo part himself at the premiere in Moscow on 7 August that year. Two years later he entered it for the Rubinstein Prize at the St Petersburg Conservatory, ignoring the requirement that candidates play a classical concerto; the jury, with Glazunov presiding unwillingly, gave him the prize anyway after copies of the printed score had been handed round the hall. The work runs about fifteen minutes in a single movement, opening and closing with the same brass-backed theme.
