Shostakovich finished the First Piano Concerto in 1933 and played the solo part himself at the premiere in Leningrad on 15 October, with Fritz Stiedry conducting. The scoring — piano, solo trumpet and strings, with no other winds — is unusual enough that the piece is often listed as a double concerto, though the trumpet spends much of it commenting from the side. He was twenty-six, and this is writing from before the official attacks: Haydn and Beethoven quoted sideways, a slow waltz at the centre, a finale that races through galop and chase music into Beethoven's Rage Over a Lost Penny.
