Stoyanov conceived the Second Symphony, Great Preslav, in 1967 and wrote it in the last year of his life. It takes its subject from the second capital of the First Bulgarian Empire and the Golden Age under Tsar Simeon, and is laid out in an unusual sequence of seven pictures: Among the ruins of Great Preslav; An old song; Horsemen approach; Before the walls of Great Preslav; Heavy step; The Round Church; The end of the song. Born in Shumen, near Pliska, Madara and Preslav, the composer had known those ruins since childhood.
