Rosen aus dem Süden was assembled in 1880 from music in the operetta Das Spitzentuch der Königin, staged at the Theater an der Wien that October. Strauss took several of its numbers and rebuilt them as a concert waltz, dedicating the score to King Umberto I of Italy, which accounts for the southern roses of the title. The operetta itself failed and left the repertoire quickly; the waltz outlived it entirely and became one of the half-dozen Strauss waltzes that orchestras programme as concert items rather than as dance music.
