Dimitar Tapkov (1929–2011) taught for decades at the State Academy of Music in Sofia and left a catalogue that runs from children's pieces to concertos for flute, harp and orchestra. The Sofia Philharmonic's register of works lists this one as Symphonia Breve 1878, the date pointing to the liberation of Bulgaria rather than to the year of writing. The scoring adds an organ to the orchestra, an unusual choice in Bulgarian symphonic music of the period and one that gives the piece its weight of public commemoration.
