The Sleeping Princess is the second of the seven movements of Trojan's Fairy Tales for accordion and orchestra, put together in 1959 from his scores for Jiří Trnka's puppet films. Its neighbours in the set are the magic box, the dragon, the naughty roundabout and the sailor with his enchanted accordion. Trojan wrote for Trnka from the 1940s onward, and the descriptive precision of that work carries into the concert piece: the accordion growls for the dragon and is left almost motionless for the princess who cannot wake.
