Trovajoli wrote the score for Dino Risi's Profumo di donna in 1974, a film taken from Giovanni Arpino's novel Il buio e il miele, in which a blinded army captain travels from Turin to Naples intending to end his life. The music works against the road-movie surface — a slow circling theme for strings and piano, closer to a tango than to comedy, returning whenever the journey's real purpose surfaces. Vittorio Gassman took the acting prize at Cannes and the film was nominated for two Academy Awards. Trovajoli, a jazz pianist by training, wrote for Italian cinema and revue for fifty years.
