The D major concerto that guitarists play is Vivaldi's Concerto for lute, two violins and continuo RV 93, written in the early 1730s. The lute Vivaldi had in mind was a small Italian instrument, close enough in range and technique that the transfer to guitar demands almost nothing. Its central Largo, a long-breathed melody over pulsing strings, became one of the most recorded pieces of eighteenth-century music after the Second World War.
