In October 1922, in Berlin, the painter Konstantin Shtarkelov sang a melody to Vladigerov, who wrote it down; a month later the composer and his violinist brother Lyuben gave the first performance of the Bulgarian Rhapsody Vardar, op. 16, for violin and piano. The tune proved to be not a Macedonian folk song but Dobri Hristov's Ednichak chuy se vik. Universal Edition published the piece in 1923, Max Rosen played it at Carnegie Hall in 1925, and Vladigerov orchestrated it in 1928. The Song from the Bulgarian Suite, op. 21, took the same route from chamber piece to orchestral score.
