Weber wrote the Bassoon Concerto in Munich in 1811 for Georg Friedrich Brandt, first bassoon of the court orchestra, in the same extraordinary few months that produced both clarinet concertos for Heinrich Baermann. Brandt gave the first performance in Munich that December. Weber revised the score in 1822 for publication as opus 75, tightening the orchestration. The slow movement, an Adagio in the manner of an operatic aria, treats the bassoon as a tenor voice rather than as the comic instrument the eighteenth century had largely made of it.
