Paul Bateman assembled his Song-Suite for violin and orchestra from six Kurt Weill numbers — Havanna-Lied, September Song, Kanonen-Song, My Ship, Speak Low and the Moritat von Mackie Messer. Daniel Hope gave the first performance with the MDR Sinfonieorchester under Yutaka Sado at the Anhaltisches Theater in Dessau, Weill's birthplace, on 7 March 2014; a chamber version followed in Los Angeles in 2017. The arrangement gathers cabaret and Broadway into a single nineteen-minute span, gives the violin the vocal line, and exposes how far Weill travelled between Berlin and New York.
