Williams scored Home Alone in 1990 at Chris Columbus's request, treating a slapstick comedy as a Christmas score: celesta, bells, boys' choir and a carol idiom borrowed from Victorian hymnody. Somewhere in My Memory, with words by Leslie Bricusse, was nominated for an Academy Award alongside the score itself and has since entered the seasonal repertoire independently of the film. The music does two jobs at once — orchestral exaggeration for the cartoon violence of the burglary scenes, and a quiet, church-like line for the boy left behind in an empty house.
