Aalen preserves a substantial part of Rome's frontier history. Its cavalry fort, described by the municipal museum as the largest north of the Alps, housed a unit of around a thousand mounted soldiers. The Limesmuseum stands on the former fort site, where the foundations of a gateway and the headquarters building remain visible in the archaeological park. The site became part of the UNESCO World Heritage property Frontiers of the Roman Empire in 2005.
The museum's collections connect the Roman settlement with the wider frontier in Baden-Württemberg. Elsewhere, the Tiefer Stollen visitor mine recalls the working lives of local miners, while Schloss Fachsenfeld preserves another chapter of the area's history. The old town also has its own legendary figure, the Aalener Spion. Remembered as a local hero, the spy belongs to the town's storytelling tradition rather than to its documented Roman past.
