Агилас

Águilas is a coastal town in the Region of Murcia, with a harbour overlooked by the Castle of San Juan de las Águilas. The present fortress was built in 1756 under Ferdinand VI, on a site with earlier defensive works; it should not be confused with the sixteenth-century predecessor.

The Hornillo loading pier opened in 1903 as part of a railway system carrying iron ore from the Sierra de los Filabres mining area to the coast. Its steel structure and associated railway remains document the town's industrial history. In the centre, the Plaza de España contains mature ficus trees and is bordered by the town hall and the church of San José. Águilas is also known for its carnival, recognised as a Festival of International Tourist Interest, and for beaches including Las Delicias and Calabardina.
