Annapolis, the capital of Maryland, developed as a colonial seaport and seat of government. Its plan uses circles and radiating streets, with St Anne's Church and the State House as prominent focal points. Eighteenth-century houses remain an important part of the historic district, including the William Paca House, now a museum.
The city's educational identity includes the United States Naval Academy and St John's College. Performing arts have a home at Maryland Hall, whose activities bring together teaching, exhibitions and performances by resident artistic organisations. Concerts and theatrical productions also take place in other venues across the city. Along the waterfront, sailing, boating and maritime services continue the relationship with the Chesapeake that shaped Annapolis's earlier commercial life.
